T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots for Virgin Trains

May 18th, 2009

T-Mobile Mobile BroadbandHot on the heels of T-Mobile losing their deal to supply Starbucks with Wi-Fi hotspots, they have struck back by signing up to provide Hotspot access on Virgin Trains.

T-Mobile will offer wireless access to Virgin passengers travelling the West Coast Main Line.  The coverage will apparently work even when the train is going through tunnels, although we’ll have to wait and see if it actually works.

The T-Mobile Wi-Fi HotSpot service, will initially launch on Virgin’s Pendolino trains, with 21 ‘Super Voyager’ trains to follow in the summer.

The service will be available for free to first class passengers and T-Mobile broadband customers.  WiFi time will cost 75p for ten minutes, £5 per hour or £10 for a full day.  If you’re likely to be a regular user you should consider signing up to T-Mobile’s mobile broadband service to get free WiFi access as part of your tariff from only £15 per month or as part of a pay as you go tariff.

T-Mobile has lost Starbucks’ WiFi hotspots to BT Openzone & O2

April 21st, 2009

Starbucks Wi-Fi

T-Mobile has lost the contract to supply Starbucks customers with WiFi hotspots.  From this week BT Openzone will start rolling out WiFi into 650 Starbucks stores across the UK.

O2 already has a deal in place with BT Openzone to provide WiFi hotspot access to its iPhone and mobile broadband customers.  Starbucks WiFi access will be added for mobile broadband customers in the summer.

This deal may impact on your choice of mobile broadband deal.  If you spend a lot of time in Starbucks because you’re a fan of their coffee, or perhaps you have business meetings there, you will now be better off signing up for O2 mobile broadband rather than T-Mobile.
